GRT Yamaha Enjoy Strong Qualifying in Misano

The GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team continued their good work in qualifying at Misano on Saturday for round seven of the 2017 FIM Supersport World Championship. Under the Italian sun home hero Federico Caricasulo secured his second front-row start of the season and will line up for Sunday's race from third on the grid. His teammate, championship leader Lucas Mahias, will head up the second row after he qualified in fourth.

Caricasulo has been quick all weekend, topping FP1 on Friday and carrying that form all the way into Superpole 2. The 21-year-old Italian was born in Ravenna, less than 80km from the track and was on pole position for the 2016 race at Misano. He set a 1:38.963 on his penultimate lap in the session to finish just 0.291s off the pole man and is confident heading into Sunday's race that he can fight for the victory.

His teammate Mahias, who leads the championship by 30 points, had earlier topped FP3 with a 1:38.547 had a lack of feeling with the front during the first part of the session that stopped him from setting a flying lap. A quick pit-stop later and he was back out on track, but the 28-year-old French rider could not push as hard as he liked due to traffic and he had to settle for a 1:39.156, over 0.5s slower than his best time from the morning's free practice session. This secured him fourth on the grid and with the pace he has shown throughout the weekend, he is looking to leave Misano having extended his championship lead.

The GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP team are back in action for Warm Up at 9:00am local time on Sunday at Misano, with the 19-lap race scheduled for 11:30am.

Interviewed: Federico Caricasulo

"I am very happy with the front-row start! I was aiming for pole here at my home race, like I did last year, but it was not possible. I am positive for tomorrow as I have a really good rhythm and I feel I can have a good race. It is always special to ride here, the atmosphere is amazing, but I always give 100% at every race. I am feeling confident with my bike, and in myself, and I feel that I can have a good race

Interviewed: Lucas Mahias

"I am happy with today's performance, but I felt I have could have been on the front row. This morning I was very fast, I did a lot of 1:38 laps, but in the afternoon the conditions were different and I couldn't go as fast. We changed the tyre and I felt more comfortable, but I didn't have a chance to set a fast lap. I am feeling confident for tomorrow's race and I will try and fight for the victory."

Interviewed: Filippo Conti

"We had a very good qualifying and we are very happy for Federico that he will start from the front row at his home race. Starting from this morning, he did a great job, our strategy that we planned out over the weekend paid off and he did great. Lucas had a lack of feeling with the front of his bike at the start of SP2, so we changed to a harder tyre and he felt much more comfortable on the bike, although he did not have a chance to set a hot lap. Tomorrow will be a fantastic race as both riders are very quick and also consistent."
