Confident Qualifying Performance for GRT Yamaha at Lausitzring on Saturday

The GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team enjoyed an excellent Saturday at the Lausitzring for round eight of the 2017 FIM Supersport World Championship. Federico Caricasulo managed to secure his third front row start of the season and he will line up on the grid in second for Sunday's race. His teammate, championship leader Lucas Mahias, put in another strong performance and will start the race from the second row in sixth. To cap off an excellent day for Yamaha, the Japanese manufacturer completed a front-row lockout, with Kallio Racing's Sheridan Morais on pole and his teammate Nicki Tuuli in third.

Caricasulo ended Friday's practice in fifth on the combined timesheets but managed to make a big step during SP2. The 21-year-old Italian had a great feeling with his Yamaha R6 and improved his time from Saturday morning's FP3 by 1.3s to set a 1:40.505 to qualify in second, just 0.065s off pole. While he was disappointed to miss out on his first pole position of the season, he is confident that he can fight at the front in tomorrow's race.
His teammate Mahias was third fastest overall after Friday's practice and hit the ground running on Saturday morning by topping FP3. The track temperatures rose in the afternoon for SP2 and the 28-year-old French rider was caught out slightly as he continued to focus on race pace instead of trying to set a hot lap, but he still managed to secure a second row start after setting a 1:40.943 to finish the session in sixth. Mahias leads the championship by five points and is looking forward to Sunday's race, especially as he feels he has an excellent race pace after running a number of simulations during practice.
The GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team are back in action on Sunday morning at 9:00am local time for Warm Up, with the 19-lap race due to start at 11:30am.

Interviewed: Federico Caricasulo

I had a good feeling today with my Yamaha R6! We tested here at the Lausitzring two weeks ago and that has helped us a lot. I am happy because the bike is working brilliantly here and I am a little disappointed to miss out on pole position. I am confident tomorrow that we can have a good race. We will try and work on the bike some more tonight and I focus on finding a good rhythm for the race. I don't really have a plan for tomorrow, but I will push as hard as I can and we will see

Interviewed: Lucas Mahias

I am not very happy as all weekend I have been battling right at the top of every session, but in qualification, I was only sixth fastest. My lap time was good compared to the time riders have been doing the rest of the weekend, but in qualifying their times were incredible and they managed to improve by over a second. I am confident for the race as my lap times during the simulations we ran were very good and I don't think the others will be able to match their pace in SP2 for 20 laps, so I am looking forward to the race tomorrow and I want to say thanks to all of my team for their excellent work this weekend.

Interviewed: Filippo Conti

We are very happy with today's results! We were a bit surprised at how much our rivals lap times dropped in Superpole, because they managed to take over a second off their best times from free practice, so they did a great job. It caught Lucas a bit by surprise how much the lap times dropped as he wasn't really focusing on setting a hot lap, but working on his race pace. Federico has done a brilliant job all weekend and he has been consistent and his race pace is not far off his hot-lap pace. Lucas has a very good race pace, and although we missed out on a hot lap in qualifying, he has a great feeling with the bike and we feel that both riders can fight at the front during the race. The team did a great job and I am very excited for tomorrow!
